Quilts

Well I took the name "yo Quiltin' Mama" and haven't added any qulits so I thought it is about time. Now I am not an expert or extremely creative. At one meeting when I presented my quilt, some people gasped in horror, sad but true. I ahve Little color sense, little detail sense but I love to take fabric and make it into something else. So I have attached me rag-tag collection. I am missing some photos of quilts I've given away but I hope to find the pictures hanging around somewhere. I firmly believe a hard copy back up is better than any computer memory. It seems we change computers rather frequently and old files have a way of getting lost/ Any way here goes:

"Snips & Snails & Puppy Dog Tails" came from a brown bag contest. You purchase a brown paper bag containing 4-1 yard lengths of fabric. The fabric doesn't necessarily coordinate but you need to make a quilt using at least 1/2 a yard of each fabric on the front of the quilt. The whilt fabric of the quilt is printed with dog items which led to the puppy theme while the snail pattern of course brought the snails. Cute but a beautiful Bethelem Star took the prize.

This quilt (sorry for the side view) was started for Erika but by the time it was done her tastes had changed, I think she got married. The center of it was hand sticthed at night while I did night shifts at a patient's house. It was really quite funny to see my contractions to keep the correct tension while I stitched. The quilt has been donated to a local charity.

"Hello Sunshine" started as something different. A mystery quilt class I took required 190 half square triangles. after I got them done, I changed my mind & changed the back ground color from white to yellow, leaving me with 100 half square triangles of the wrong combo.

So I used them to make this quilt, which has since moved to Maine. The darker shade is really light blue with yellow smily faces. Erika's mother-in-law has it to bright her gloomy Maine winters. As for the mystery quilt, I wasn't real happy with the way it turned out, I donated it to the Edwards Family Reunion & I think Nadine Edwards bought it. One think I learned was to stick with your first impressions (unless someone wiser provides better insight).

One of my favorite quilts is my first mystery quilt. It was at a class at Fat Quarter Quilts a small place that has unfortunately closed. It had the best staff, they were always so friendly and supportive. They were willing to take time to understand your tastes and help put together fabrics that coordinated (one of my weak spots). "The Cat Quilt" is name because the blue edge and back have these delightful cats on it. All of the other colors came from the same line with the exception of the cream colors. By the tiem I got to the quilt, I a had a few scraps. I'm sure an expreienced quilter whould have thought we were crazy but the smal squares are actually 9 patches of 1" squares individually sewn, but it gives such a unique look.

My third Edwards Reunion quilt came from may fabric stasch. I wanted something fun, easy and simple. I like how it came out but I'm not great for making it to the reunions, so it's been hanging in my closet for 3 years. I keep forgetting. Maybe next year.

I think I have posted enough for today, whew, that's a record for me.
I've started a new fabric craft. Not that it's new, it's just new to me. Fabric coil bowls. I'll add them too.

But for now the dogs are attacking someone I've got to go.

Before pictures

We started remodeling in early spring. These are our dated "before" picture. Attracting kitchen with beige walls, whitewashed cabinets, pink tile and a lovely florecent lighting fixture which echoed the shape of the island. The island, I might point out which never allowed the frig door to open completely

Next we have the dinette and atrium door. Any visitors may remember the delicate, mis-shaped sheers that hung on the glass doors.

And who can forget the camel colored carpet, whitewashed fireplace mantle and shelfabove the couch?

The formal livingroom. And just to make it interesting, the picture is upside down. But you get the idea. After 14 years, can you say boring.

One class I took required me to take a common medical item and use it in a completely different way. I was a way to get use to think outside the box. Remembering how a wonderful liquid called Genion violet stained Erika's mouth purple when she was a baby with thrush, I decided to dye some fabric. Our ever dependable pharmacist Mark suggested Betadine as another medical liquid that stains fabric.

Using unbleached muslin I dyed one third violet, one third rusty brown and left one third it's natural color. After drying the fabric on my back fence, I cut and sewed a the following star.

I got an A on the assignment.

Well hello. A few years ago I was in a postgraduate computer class. One of the assignments was to create a blog. I hated it. Part of the final was to blog how I felt about the blog. I announced my intentions to close the blog and never do it again. (I didn't get a stellar grade.) But with a daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter moving out of the country I am returning to blog. After spending time on Facebook, I am liking the blog better.

To those of you who will follow my meanderings, welcome. To quilting friends I hope you enjoy some of my stuff. And to my family hope to see you soon. Be talking to you.

Well hello everyone. I am attempting to enter the twenty first century, dragging and kicking my feet all the way. My husband is against any of this but I do have a rebelious streak. I won't guarentee anything, the last time I attempted to do anything like this, I failed miserably; unless of couse you count 2 weeks of diet logs.

Anyway welcome, hopefully I'll develop the knack for blogging and do well at it.

See you all soon.
:)
